Welcome to KIDS MAKE ART Gallery 2014. The young artists ages range between 6-12 years old. This is just some of the creative mischief we got up too in this year.

Irresistible Delectable Pop Art Cakes

These Delectable Deserts were inspired by our mystery artist this week. The Pop Artist Wayne Thiebaud and his delicious cake shop window paintings.

Delectable Deserts inspired by Wayne Thiebaud

We looked at lots of Wayne Thiebaud cakes and desert paintings and talked about how they were presented, the lines, colours and the space. And that when you see these paintings in real-life the texture of the paint is so rich and thick and layered on just like whipped cream or icing.

One day we might just use some thick paint like icing at Kids Make Art but on this day we used watercolor, bold lines and framed shadow boxes to make our delectable deserts really POP out.

EXTREME DOODLING - It's the new Super Art

We kicked off the term with Extreme Doodling.

Random thoughts and patterns.

Our hands and heads in free-fall, just like the automatic writing of the Surrealists.

We discussed 'Arte Povera' & 'Dada' where art was made on and with everyday materials, like paper bags, envelopes and scribbles on the pages of books.

Thinking about Graffiti, Maximalist Art, early Howard Arkley paintings, Dr Seuss and more.

We Doodled to the MAX! AND what an amazing result.

Did you know that research has shown that Doodling can actually be good for us? Not only does it help us problem solve, free our minds from clutter but apparently it also keeps us from day-dreaming and falling asleep during important classes and meetings. Meaning we are actually more engaged in what is going on around us when doodling than was previously thought.
How cool is that?

Good Vibrations – Visual Music

Imagine what sound waves might look like.

Good Vibrations ages 6-12years
Imagine how a pulsating beat or slow relaxing rhythms might appear as a line.

Good Vibrations ages 6-12years

Imagine the colour of sounds.

Good Vibrations ages 6-12years

The KMA Artists were asked to think of their favorite piece of music or song and to consider what kind of visual vibration might your chosen music create?
We discussed the emotion in their piece perhaps being a good place to start…. is it up-beat, happy, energetic or calm, peaceful, serene.
The speed is expressive too! Is the rhythm fast, slow or both.

Good Vibrations ages 6-12years

We put on our smocks and played out our visual vibes with hypnotic dynamic results.
Fabulous work guys!

SERIOUSLY SCARY DRAWING SKILLS WITH SKULLS FOR HALLOWEEN

Halloween was seriously scary at Kids Make Art with the seriously challenging Observational Drawing of seriously Still Life Human Skulls.

But GOSH.....I was so impressed with how all these wonderful young artists embraced the challenge of learning about observational drawing. Such a universally hated subject but so important for a visual and special intelligence. No matter what anybody will tell you there is a group of skills and tricks to drawing that takes years to learn. So why not start now, I wish I had this opportunity at this age.

First we had fun experimenting with lots of different types & grades of pencils to create various lines and tones. How holding a pencil in different ways can change the kinds of marks you make. Experimenting with different pressure to create different shades and marks. Using paper stubs and rubber for shading.

Warm-ups & Shading studies

I was astonished how willing everyone was to try these skills out drawing 3D shapes. Trying basic shapes and measuring up in our speedy thumb nail sketches. Then the most difficult challenging part, the one I was find so hard, putting all these skills together, to create our Still-Life with A Skull Drawing.

Warm-ups & Shading studies

It was intense learning but everyone did so well I had to share these rough sketches because they are all just so great and all about creating new skills, not the final product. The final drawings of the skulls were fantastic, but I do not want to focus on those because the focus is and was about the experimentation and exploration of these really new skills and concepts. I did not get to take many pictures of the finals because it just wasn’t about that! I found these were all so brilliant!

Some of the drawn skulls and cartoon skulls at the end here that everyone had a play with in free time would never have been so cool if we had not explored some drawing techniques first.
Drawing this way is a tough task but sometimes it is healthy to be challenged and get some more tools in your art box of tricks.

TOTALLY WICKED ACRYLIC PAINT SKINS

This week we pulled up our sleeves.

Threw on our smocks and got really messy making acrylic paint skins.

SUCH awesome fun just playing with the beautiful colours and textures of paint.

Creating amazing effects by pulling blobs of sticky colours across plastic surfaces.

When the paint dries it peels off just like a skin. Next week we will make some more amazing art using these paint skins.

Our mystery artist this week was French Artist Bernard Frize. We will be exploring more about what he does with paint skins in his work next week when we create our collages and artworks.

You can find out more about this artist if you want by clicking on his name below
